CentOS and the RHEL ecosystem on ColossusCloud
Red Hat, and its open source derivative CentOS, has long been the most popular Linux distribution in the enterprise market. Backed by Red Hat, a multi-billion dollar company dedicated to Linux in the enterprise, CentOS delivers rock-solid stability and broad software compatibility.
CentOS Stream is now the upstream development branch of RHEL. CentOS 10 Stream is our newest offering, built on the same source that feeds RHEL 10 and bringing the latest kernel, toolchain, and security improvements. It is well suited for both development and production workloads that benefit from staying current with the Red Hat ecosystem.
For teams that prefer a traditional, fixed-release model, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux are available as 1:1 RHEL-compatible replacements. Both receive long-term security updates and are fully supported on ColossusCloud. If you prefer a Debian-based distribution, Ubuntu LTS is also available.
Need a web hosting control panel? cPanel is the industry's leading web management software, and it works great with CentOS and AlmaLinux. Select the cPanel option when deploying your VPS and it will be installed automatically.
Why host CentOS in the cloud
RHEL compatibility
CentOS is built from the same source code as Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Enterprise software certified for RHEL runs on CentOS without modification. Your team can use familiar tools like yum, dnf, systemctl, and SELinux across all RHEL-family distributions.
Enterprise stability
CentOS prioritizes stability over bleeding-edge features. Packages are thoroughly tested before release, and ABI compatibility is maintained throughout the lifecycle. Production workloads benefit from predictable behavior and fewer surprises after updates.
cPanel and web hosting
CentOS and AlmaLinux are the go-to choices for cPanel-based web hosting. Deploy a VPS with automated cPanel installation and manage websites, email accounts, databases, and SSL certificates from a familiar control panel.
SELinux security
CentOS ships with SELinux enabled by default, providing mandatory access controls that limit the damage from compromised applications. Enforcing strict security policies protects your VPS even if a web application or service is exploited.
AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux available
In addition to CentOS, ColossusCloud offers AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux as 1:1 RHEL-compatible alternatives. Both receive long-term security updates and are drop-in replacements for CentOS with no migration pain.
Broad software ecosystem
Access thousands of packages through the CentOS repositories, EPEL, and third-party repos. Install Nginx, Apache, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Node.js, Python, Docker, and more with standard package management tools.

Frequently asked questions
ColossusCloud offers CentOS 7 and CentOS 10 Stream. We also offer AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux as fully RHEL-compatible alternatives. For new deployments, we recommend AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux for the longest support lifecycle.
CentOS 7 reached end of life on June 30, 2024 and no longer receives security updates from the CentOS project. We still offer it for legacy workloads, but strongly recommend migrating to AlmaLinux 9 or Rocky Linux 9 for active security support.
CentOS Stream is a rolling-release distribution that sits just ahead of RHEL. It receives updates continuously rather than in fixed point releases. CentOS 10 Stream is well suited for development and production workloads that benefit from staying current with the RHEL ecosystem.
cPanel runs on CentOS 7, AlmaLinux 8 and 9, and Rocky Linux 8 and 9. When deploying your VPS on ColossusCloud, select the cPanel option and it will be installed automatically during provisioning. The setup takes about an hour and includes web hosting, email, database, and SSL tools.
If you need a traditional, stable RHEL-compatible distribution with long-term support, AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux are the recommended replacements for CentOS. Both are 1:1 binary compatible with RHEL and receive regular security updates. They are available on ColossusCloud alongside CentOS.
Yes. Daily backups are available as an add-on for a small monthly fee. Your entire VPS is snapshotted every day. Restore to any previous snapshot with one click from the control panel if a yum update or configuration change causes problems.
